Ressurection Reflections

Since we are about to celebrate the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ for sinners such as you and I-it is very appropriate to reflect on the Cross of Christ.

Last night in our Bible Study we were discussing Galatians Chapter 2:19-21. There is so much glorious doctrinal truth about what Christ accomplished for his own in this passage: If justification could come from keeping the law-then Christ died in vain. But Christ died as a substitution for our sins and was raised from the dead for our justification. To be justified is to be declared righteous. It is not that something is taken away-it is that something is added-the very righteousness of Christ.

Three wonderful truths we need to remember about what Christ did for his own at this time of the year are these.

1. Jesus was born of a virgin-born under the law Gal. 4:4-5. He lived a perfect-sinless life and fulfilled every jot and tittle of the law- Matt. 5:17. The doctrine of Imputation teaches us that the very righteousness of Christ is given to the believer-it's not just that our sins are forgiven and taken away as far as the east is from the west-it is the marvelous truth that Christ's perfection is added to our account when we are in Christ.

2. On the cross Jesus died as our substitute-taking the wrath of God for the sins of the believer-this is the doctrine of Substitutionary Atonement. 1 Cor 15:3-Heb. 9:14-1Pe. 2:24. We must never forget that on that cross he bore the penalty for every sin we ever have or ever will commit. We can't ever have a lazy attitude toward our sin-it cost our Savior too much for us to play fast and loose with sin.

3. The Resurrection of Christ guarantees our justification before God the Father. Rom. 4:25 If Christ was not raised BODILY  from the dead-then the grave is the end of us- 1Cor. 15:16-17. But He is risen-and we will be raised too.

What a glorious doctrinal feast is set for us in these truths-Christ lived a perfect sinless life-which is credited to the believer- Christ died to pay the penalty for our sins-and Christ is risen indeed- we who believe in Him will live forever because these things are true truth!

Will you join me in singing  "Hallelujah What a Savior"?
 “Man of Sorrows!” what a name
  For the Son of God, who came
  Ruined sinners to reclaim.
  Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Bearing shame and scoffing rude,
In my place condemned He stood;
Sealed my pardon with His blood.
Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Guilty, vile, and helpless we;
Spotless Lamb of God was He;
“Full atonement!” can it be?
Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Lifted up was He to die;
“It is finished!” was His cry;
Now in Heav’n exalted high.
Hallelujah! What a Savior!

When He comes, our glorious King,
All His ransomed home to bring,
Then anew His song we’ll sing:
Hallelujah! What a Savior!

 I Timothy 1:17
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

  1. I just read N. T. Wright's recent article against imputation (a clarification of his New Perspective on Paul) he delivered at the Evangelical Theological Society this spring. I derive so much joy from the reality of imputation. I'm curious if his "New Perspective" comes with new joy. I wonder what vacuum he experiences in his sanctification. There’s no replacing the imputation. Great article Vicki! Let’s shout it from the rooftop!

  5. Thank you for this Vicky. I really love this song. Because it's a slow meditative song it gives us a chance to really think deeply about the words.

    I know that sometimes I can get so caught up in trying to figure out how many angels can dance on the head of a pin that I can forget to stop and remember the Gospel message.

    "For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified." 2 Cor 2:2

    God bless you sister!
